Gabriel gasped like a drowning man when he emerged from the darkness. Not sure where he was, his head whipped back and forth trying to get his bearings. Everything was hazy, like he had just awakened from a short nap, but the chill in his bones ushered the grogginess away. He tried to push himself off the ground, but collapsed back down in pain when his broken arm reminded him of what he had just gone through.

“Don’t try to move just yet, kid. Take a few minutes to let your body adjust,” Rogue urged him.

“What happened? How did I get here?” Gabriel was confused.

“What happened is that I cheated the reaper out of his due, but I had to bring you through the Shadow Lands to do it. Even with my buddy passes”—he pointed to his eyes—“traveling through the Shadow Lands is like a bad hangover, so I can’t imagine how you’re feeling.”

Gabriel got up off the ground. His legs were a little unsteady but held fast. “I feel like crap, but I guess better that than dead. I owe you … again.”

“Yeah, you do, but I’m not keeping score,” Rogue said. “Where’s the Nimrod?”

“Titus took it,” Gabriel said shamefully.

“Then we need to get it back or all this will be for nothing. How bad are you hurt?”

“I think my arm is broken,” Gabriel told him.

“Okay, but since you’re standing, I’m assuming that you can walk, so let’s go,” Rogue urged him forward toward the battle.

The Hummer sat on three wheels with Titus’s body under the fourth wheel, prone. A few feet away the Nimrod lay, reverted to the broken pitchfork it had been when DeMona first brought it to Gabriel. Gilgamesh climbed from the driver’s side window while Teko pulled Leah out through the busted back window. Rogue and Gabriel arrived at the wreck about the same time DeMona and Mercy did.

“Glad to see you’re still with us, General,” Mercy greeted Gabriel.

“I could say the same. Where’s Orden?” Gabriel asked.

“Waiting around for the vultures to come pick at his corpse,” DeMona answered.

“Slain Orden, you have?” Gilchrist asked in shock.

“It was either him or us,” DeMona said. She had expected him to make a stink, or possibly even try to take revenge for his brother’s murder, but to her surprise, he started laughing.

“Many seasons, joke of the goblin court, I have been. Abused by Orden, I was. Now, him dead, and Gilchrist prince of goblins.” The little goblin clapped his hands excitedly.

“Well, congratulations on your promotion. For as much as we would love to stay for your coronation, I think its best we get out of here. Looks like the shock of seeing their prince missing his head has worn off and your buddies look pissed.” DeMona pointed at the goblins that were advancing on them.

“No need to run, you have. I’m new goblin prince, and horde must listen to me. Him”—he pointed to Gabriel—“save Gilchrist life. A debt owed, there is. And now I settle it.” Gilchrist came around the side of the Hummer and addressed the approaching goblins.
